I recently attended a networking event with a friend. There were speakers, panel discussions, and an opportunity to network with other women business owners during the last hour. This event was organized and very informative, but I learned a valuable lesson about myself. I WAS NOT COMPLETELY PREPARED! You know the saying - "Be ready, so you don't have to get ready." Well, I can tell you that when it came to pitching my business, I fumbled over my words a few times. My delivery was neither clear nor was it consistent. In addition, I did not bring enough business cards. (Yes..in this digital world, a business card is still a thing...lol). As a business owner, you are your brand...a walking and talking billboard so to speak. Over the years, I have held many jobs. I am a retired, Federal Government employee, and I'm a former Mary Kay, Avon, Tupperware, bank teller, and retail sales consultant. I also own two businesses. So, I already KNOW that first impression and first contact are crucial to promoting a business in an impactful manner. Truthfully, I believe that I was too confident in my abilities to talk about my business because I am always promoting on social media. But, no worries. Making mistakes is how you grow, right? And, if you don't grow, you become stagnant. Not just in business, but in life in general. To get a little help, I decided to ask the ChatGPT App for tips on crafting a compelling elevator pitch within a 30-second timeframe and to develop my pitch for "Baring My Soul Creations".
Here's what ChatGPT came up with:
Start with a Hook: Begin your elevator pitch with a captivating hook that grabs the listener's attention right away. This could be a thought-provoking question, a compelling statement, or a surprising fact that relates to your business.
Clearly State the Problem: Clearly identify the problem or pain point that your target audience faces. This helps establish a common ground and shows that you understand their needs.
Present Your Unique Solution: Highlight the unique solution your business offers to address the problem. Clearly communicate how your product or service stands out from competitors and how it effectively solves the identified problem.
Focus on Benefits, Not Just Features: Instead of overwhelming the listener with technical details or features of your product or service, emphasize the benefits it provides. Explain how your solution positively impacts the lives or businesses of your potential customers.
Use Simple and Clear Language: Keep your pitch simple and jargon-free. Use clear and concise language to ensure that anyone can understand your message, even if they're not familiar with your industry.
Be Passionate and Authentic: Infuse your elevator pitch with passion and authenticity. Show genuine enthusiasm for your business and its mission. This helps create a connection with the listener and makes your pitch more memorable.
Include Social Proof: Incorporate any relevant social proof or testimonials to build credibility. This can include positive customer reviews, notable partnerships, or industry recognition that showcases the success and trustworthiness of your business.
End with a Clear Call to Action: Conclude your elevator pitch with a strong and concise call to action. Clearly state what you want the listener to do next, whether it's scheduling a meeting, visiting your website, or trying out your product. Make it easy for them to take the next step.
Practice, Iterate, and Refine: Practice delivering your elevator pitch in the mirror to ensure it flows smoothly and sounds natural. Seek feedback from others and be open to making changes and improvements based on their input. Continuously iterate and refine your pitch to make it more effective over time.
Adapt to Your Audience: Tailor your elevator pitch to the specific audience you're addressing. Consider their background, interests, and needs. By customizing your pitch to resonate with them, you increase the chances of capturing their attention and generating interest in your business.
Remember, the goal of an elevator pitch is to spark interest and curiosity, leaving the listener wanting to learn more about your business. By following these tips and tailoring them to your specific business, you'll be well-equipped to create a powerful and concise elevator pitch that effectively promotes your small business within 30 seconds.
Pretty impressive, huh? Please do not sleep on ChatGPT because it can literally be your virtual, business assistant when you use the right prompts. Below is an example of my elevator pitch developed by ChatGPT:

In this elevator pitch, ChatGPT incorporated the key elements I mentioned in my prompt, including my name, business name, the target audience (Creative Black women), and the range of products and services I offer. ChatGPT also highlighted the inspirational aspect of my offerings, as well as the soul-care activities that focus on holistic well-being. It included a clear call to action, inviting potential customers to visit my website, subscribe, and join your private Facebook group. The pitch aims to resonate with the audience's aspirations and desire for connection and personal growth. The cool thing is that I can continue to tailor this pitch to meet my needs. This is a great start!
